Witch hunt

The setting: A small backwater village in the New England colonies in the late seventeenth century.  A time of superstition and myth, of zealots, pagans, and occultists. A time of fear. 
 
Witches, hags, and warlocks: The most feared and hated of all practitioners of magic are witches and warlocks. They practice black magic, a self-serving art involving the placing of curses, and pacts with demons who will perform malicious deeds on their behalf, such as spoiling crops, poisoning water supplies, outright killing someone or even turning them into a werewolf. They can also grant strange powers, such as the ability to take control of an unsuspecting victim, raise the dead, or fly. Their powers are some of the most overt of the magic users. These demons often require some form of sacrifices to comply; the first sacrifice is often the witch’s soul. Experienced witches may prolong their lives naturally by become a hideous creature with sickly grey skin, a beak like nose, and black blood; these are known as hags.  The main difference is that witches operate in groups when they can (though they may not always), and tend to terrorize a single area, whereas Warlocks are strictly traveling loners. 
 
The cunning folk: Shamans and wise women are examples of this. With white magic abilities to invoke helpful spirits, undo curses, drive off beings of evil, and heal others, they are in many ways the counterpart to a witch and are as potent a spell caster in every way. Some watch over villages, and others go where they are needed. Certain holy men and witch hunters have similar abilities.
 
Magician: A magician is a bit further detached than witches or the cunning folk. They are often well educated members of society who study the arcane and the occult with a scientific approach. They can and will use both black and white magic but are not as connected to either. Mostly they are summoners, diviners, and alchemists (in the turning metal to gold sense) for whom the direct channelling of magic is a rigorously precise and scientific process. Some deeply involved in the art will create magical items to defend themselves from fellow magic users

The truth is he is a devoted magician in hiding from certain powerful rivals. He is very skilled and dedicated to his craft, and sports an impressive library of black and white magic.

Background: Rowan Is a minister in the town this is set in, trained in the clergy from a young age, he  may not be as devout and zealous as the town minister, but is generally into helping people and a rather and just a rather relaxed presence to be around; someone you feel like you can talk, and is there to help.

Background: She's a long traveling warlock intent on amassing as much power for herself as powerful as possible. She doesn't care about covens or much of anything else, no ethics whatsoever she will slice a babies throat and give their soul to a demon for a service.

Background: She is the leader of a large and fearsome coven, which is known and feared throughout the land. Her climbing of the ranks were often not in the least noble; it involved a lot of backstabbing, blood, poison, whatever she needed in order to achieve her goal of leadership.

Appearance: She is nothing short of beautiful, with long silver hair, her skin holding a light dusting from the sun. Her eyes are bright, slightly slanted, and an incredible golden hue, which are then framed in thick lashes. She has cheekbones enough to cut glass, and has a slight Aquiline nose. Her canine teeth are slightly elongated and more pointed than normal, and her nails are long and sharp.
Background: She is the daughter of the clan chief, although does not share the same morals. Forever inquisitive, she instead questions the cause of their kin’s destruction on the humans. However, she will never step out of line out of fear of what her mother would do.

The magician Sebastian Lawrence had come to the town of Rivervale in the backwoods of the new world to escape his magical enemies in the old one, he had not anticipated the sheer danger that the town would hold; not only from the superstitious and largely illiterate locals who would no doubt accuse him of witchcraft if they found out about his more arcane activities, but also from the specter of dark magic that felt heavy in the air. He had a few well armed and well trained guards on the premise of his home that could hold off the peasants with their riffles and sabers, but demons... those his guards were not equipped for. Still he had been here a week and no sign of these witches yet, which may not be a good thing.The magician puzzled over his situation as he sat in his library reading a book on magic, with a magic scepter in one hand, magic items were his best defense against the demon granted abilities of a witch.

Appearance: Altena is the young teen that most would probably crush on within her next 10 years. She's got long brown curly hair and dazzling deep blue eyes. Her nose is small and pointed, her skin slightly pale. She usually wears either a peasant dress or a cloak over it. She rarely wears any jewelry on herself.
Background: Altena is born of two peasant humans and since birth it seemed there was something strange about her. First of all her appearance. Of her whole entire bloodline which goes back for generations, none of her bloodline ever had blue eyes or brown hair, much less curly hair, so she looks nothing like her blonde and brown eyed family. Until recently she's found out she had certain "powers" being her magic that she has yet to know any sense of and she doesn't have any control over her magic either.

A scream pierced the air. A crowd had gathered in a spot near to Sebastian's house. A demon had forcefully, painfully, taken control of an old woman, whose jaw moved in an unnatural manner, like it was dislocated and now was controlled by strings. Her eyes bulged from their sockets, and a raspy voice could be heard muttering a strange and unusual tongue.


A woman watched from the bench, a scowl of contempt creasing her otherwise exquisite features. Her alluring appearance had of course attracted many a stare, and more than enough attention from the locals, but she had sent them on their way easily enough. She knew what was happening, and why: it was nothing more than a show off fear. That, as well as to kill off a woman who had been growing dangerously close to the coven, and had been starting rumours to the identity of the witches. Still, Mercy doubted all... this was necessary. Why not just kill her swiftly and silently and have it done with? Show a bit of, well, mercy.

The clergyman called hunt was quick upon the scene, he was different than most people in the town very relaxed; were he not orphaned at a young age by the coven's scheme's though of course he was mostly unaware of that, he would like not have been in the local clergy at all. He certainly didn't fit all the fire and brimstone, a very patient and understand; not to mention handsome person. Interestingly enough he was actually quite the magically gifted as most anyone learned in magic could see. He did not know this himself, but his presence put those around him at ease, and he could drive off demons with what he and the villager's assumed was faith, he was also literate which among the peasants only clergymen often were. He was first to the woman nudging anyone in his way gently aside. With concern on his face he knelt beside the woman put a hand on her arm and recited the lord's prayer, it was subconsciously that he used light magic to drive off the demon as it always was; he was too late to save the woman but as the demon was banished, her final moments were eased.

This caused another scream. Only it was different than the last; this time it was a scream not made by any living creature. It shook your very core, it lingered in your ears and in your head even long after it faded. The demon erupted from the woman in a squeal, dark tendrils grasping at air, before it disappeared in the wind.

Mercy watched the man with curious eyes, her head cocked slightly to one side. She wondered why her mother had not called for his death yet, as he often interrupted such things. It was probably to give the villagers a glint of hope. Something to cling on to so their ripping it away would be all the more destructive.

The ever aloof magician watched the seen from his manor not far away, from a window on the fourth floor, he hadn't been here two and the witches had brazenly murdered with a demon in the middle of town... so this was one of those towns... lovely...

Rowan was indeed probably a bit inspiring a strong handsome young man who's presence is like acid to demons. He picked up the woman and took her to the church, as it was not safe to have it in the street.

And then everyone continues with their day now that all the excitement was over.

Altena was just roaming around but stopped walking when she heard screams and went to investigate them. Being as ever curious, she always liked exploring even though it might get her into trouble when she least expects it. She spotted Rowan carrying a lady into a church and followed after him.

Rowan just took it to the church to sanctify the body, damn witches.

The magician was not too worried about things, he was surprised the witches were ignoring his presence but that was fine with him

Mercy caught Sebastian's eyes while he gazed out of the window. A crowd walked in front of her, obscuring her from view, but when they passed she was gone.

Altena slowly followed Rowan into the church and he could hear her footsteps on the floor of it.

Sebastian was of course far from defenseless, attacking him in his home was practically suicide, he returned to his library, possibly the best in the new world.

"Altena" Rowan greeted her without turning around, he was grim today as a woman had been murdered in a most vile way

Altena paused in her next step and looked at him with wide eyes. How did he know her name? She gulped nervously and pulled her hood of her cloak down. "Ummmm, hi." she greeted him nervously.

(He knows her name because in puritan communities everyone has to go to the church where he works, also it's a small town everyone knows everyone)

Altena gave him a slow wave of her hand and then looked at the woman he had carried.

Background: Trystan Is the apprentice of the powerful warlock Sophia. He is quite religious and determined to keep his soul which she scorns as foolish, but she continues to teach Trystan due to his skill, and willingness to sacrifice others.
