Of Monsters and Madness (Background)

In the beginning there was naught..and where there was naught , there were monsters... Heinous cruel eldritch creatures clashing in never ending battles in the endless dark that was all of reality. An inky black sea that ran on forever and teemed with horrors that swam through the abyss in numbers beyond comprehension , the only ruling force the cruel hand of the most powerful of these monsters,Dark Lords of Nothing , masters of the All. For millenia the existed unchallenged , destroying and enslaving ,ever starved and ever consuming in the never ending night...But then as with all nights , dawn came. None know who caused this change , from the dimmest of mortals to the eldest of the gnawers in the dark, bursting from the blackness came the universe. Thousands of new worlds ,stars and galaxies forming over the many millenia into what we know today , and as it settled they invaded. Setting up their own depraved realms over the many worlds that billions of years later would hold life , they held rule first and they have never forgotten this. Yet, written in the dead languages of a thousand races te legend speak , one rebelled , seeking to protect this new universe , and harnessing the energy of the universes' light...banished them back to the dark,sacrificing himself in turn. To the empty void surrounding the material existence , the All-Else . There the dark lords plot and scheme hoping to break through once more , and the cracks are beginning to widen, and soon they may pour through to claim the universe they see as theirs.

Modern man knows little of this , of the gnawers in the dark and the great rebel , he knows only what is apparent to him , and is blind to the greater workings of things. Blissful in his ignorance , the only indication of the truth in his mind slumbering deep down in the dark of his skull where instinct lies. There beneath all the comfortable deceit and ignorance lurks one truth. One that would threaten to drive someone to madness , one that compels truth seekers to go to the dark places of the world searching for an answer they never asked the questions for , stirring those that lay bound in the dark. For deep beneath the Earth slumbering below the light of the sun lie some of the monsters , those not banished to the outside of reality , an when they awaken they will reveal that truth once more , the truth of monsters and madness. And to hide this from them a secret organization stretches it's thrall across the world unbeknownst to the average human , the Grand Parliament. A secret council that controls the entirety of mankind from the shadows , as is whispered of in conspiracy theories , only they and a few others are privy to the truth and take it as their task to protect the rest of humanity , for threats do not only come from outside of this universe...but from outside of this dimension.

Demons , a race similar to humanity in so many ways , but wholly alien in others , hailing from another mirror dimension to ours they often come to ours on what they call 'business trips' making deals in their currency of choice..the human soul. The myriad tales of deal-giving devils come from these creatures who travel to our world preying on the weak and unlucky , on the ambitious and the amoral , their dark powers allowing them to wreak havoc in relative secrecy. Yet even these often devious creatures hate the monsters from beyond , who even in their world are a deadly threat , and clashes between demons and dark beings are common. And the lords of hell would rather it's flaming pits freeze over than to ever deal with such abominations.

It is against these many threats that could annihilate us all that humans must defend as best they can, the first solution being to fight fire with fire in the form of wizardry. The manipulation of the many cosmic and mystical energies to turn the power of the energy against him the the form of spells , throughout Earth's history many orders of such wizards ,sorcerers and witches have existed , some for ill some for good. Some serving their original purpose warding off the great enemy and the fiends of flame , others bowing to them and becoming thralls to those foreign powers. Yet now there are few , and the number of wielders of the mystic forces that now walk earth is under ten , their art having died out with the industrial revolution.

  With few wizards left to protect mankind The Parliament decided to take another approach , the evolution of the human mind. Instead of manipulating mystic and mysterious energies they created a breed of human capable of manipulating the material forces , gravity , magnetism , radiation , these fall under the thrall of the psychic.These mysterious defenders are 'grown' miles beneath the earth in top secret facilities , created from DNA harvested from those volunteering their bodies to science. Implanted with an array of mind boosting augments designed with bleeding edge bio-technology , that allows them to harness the brain's full potential and enabling a sort of sixth sense vital to their superhuman abilities. Empathy , clairvoyance , telepathy on one hand , telekinesis , flight, and other more subtle abilities on the other. ..Humanity evolved to ward off it's foes with it's own power , masters of the mind, and the most numerous force of protectors we have against those who would see our destruction. These psychics , though young and inexperienced are the parliaments first and last line of defense. And perhaps the greatest hope for humanities survival against the coming storm.

Yet with the release of the first of the dark tombs , the eldritch begin to arise from their deep slumber , and now  magic, the mundane and the mind will be put to the test against the forces of monsters and madness.
