The Dread Hammers: Space Marine RP Background

In the Imperium of Man the space Marine is equated with many things , deadly efficiency , might ,and most of all boundless courage. The ability to stare the most terrifying daemon in the face, and then plunge one's power sword into it's unholy heart.To look stolidly into the face of the void and continue on nonplussed. Yet this value is most loved by one chapter in particular ,The Dread Hammers , a smaller chapter based on the feral world of Garmr. A terrifying blasted world riddle with murderous creatures Dread Hammer initiates are put through trial after terrifying trial that would break a normal man just to make it in. But some question where this true obsession with courage begin? And that is where things take a darker turn , unknown to the Imperium at large , the Dread Hammers were created from the gene seed of a fully redeemed Night Lords captain. As such their chapter lineage runs straight up to the traitor primarch...Konrad Curze..the Night Haunter of Nostramo. As Konrad was obsessed with the infliction of terror , the Dread Hammers have long practiced the art of deflecting it. Their powerful shock and awe tactics a mighty counter for the terror inflicted by their traitorous kin. Yet despite their anonymity and loyalty , they find themselves now untrusted  and undermanned with their chapter now only at half strength after a particularly brutal campaign for a system of Shrine Worlds. And with whispers of an incursion from the warp spreading into their territory it seems as though their trials do not end.But trial is the life of a Dread Hammer , and Terror Is For The Enemy!

Codex compliant: Partial compliance, they maintain codex mandated chapter strength, but have been reduced to half strength after several grueling battles with the night lords over a series of shrine worlds


Unit formations

House: A house is roughly equal to a company each one consisting of one to two hundred members and being lead by a brother patriarch who is roughly equivalent to a captain, there are currently four standing houses instead of the usual eight, two are grounded on Garmr at half strength.

Septi:The Septi comprised of seven Battle brothers lead by an elect chosen by the sept. The septi are even less formal than the House, the brother’s share a strong bond having often gone through their gruelling training and trials of fear (grueling chapter specific trials to teach the initiates to overcome fear) together. Librarians Techmarines and apothecaries are incorporated into these sects; though only the first will ever be placed in an assault sept.


Quirks: They have a number of totems of their home world’s giant bird Owl Roc which is known to eat giant bat , They posses an Unusual number of psykers, They are close to the sisters of battle, they believe the emperor to be a manifestation of the concept of valor.

The greatest weakness of the Dread hammers is their total lack of devastator marines. Assault marine septi armed with chapter modified silent jump packs with the capacity for high altitude drops, thunder hammers or chainswords, and bolt pistols make up the bulk of the chapter’s forces. Septi of tactical marines often with a single marine armed with a heavy weapon such as a meltagun fill support roles initial assault, and are used to bear the brunt of any counter attack. The chapter is a bit light on ground vehicles, but not direly so, and nearly every assault will involve a serious level of air support, and often dropping in heavy vehicles.

The Garmr Planetary defense force

Favored tactics: Suppression by accurately directed and massive amounts of firepower, in conjunction with airstrikes and/or artillery bombardment to wipe out the suppressed units or force them out, If this is not tenable they will likely opt for Attrition. Their training is overseen by the the Dread Hammer astartes, and they will often deploy as a Supplementary force to the Legion to reinforce an offensive, or hold ground the legion has taken.

Favored regiments: Heavy infantry, and artillery

Favored enemy: Chaos marines

Recruitment and training policy: A child taken from the stock of best warriors among planet’s tribes, one the three walled cities of Garmr, or a planet where the Dread Hammer’s maintain a presence, but deemed to be unfit to become an astartes will not be discarded. Instead they will put in a separate more survivable, but still grueling training program for the Garmr planetary defense force. These individuals will be trained from childhood by the astartes themselves, they are of strong stock, trained to the standards demanded by the astartes, and well equipped, often to the standards of storm troopers.

Quirks: Close ties to the Mechanicum, extreme pride of Garmr

Equipment: Hotshot lasguns and carapace armor are standard issue, and hotshot volley guns are not uncommon. Heavy bolters, plasma gun, lascanons, mortors, ect are all available to heavy infantry in vast quantities.

Quirks: Are ostracized from the ecclesiarchy unofficially for befriending the Dread hammers, have befriended the Dread Hammers, Have trained giant six foot tall battle cats possessing of natural active camouflage native to their world to assist, cool headed for their ilk.

Organizational structures: They are fairly normal in this regard; however they refer to their commanderies as wings, and missions as Talons. They also have sniper teams known as “Singers”

Equipment: They posses fairly standard equipment, but with fewer flamers and chains swords, and the use of the occasional sniper rifle.

Homeworld: The Frigid Steam World of Boreas V ruled through stewardship, a world of either glacial ice wastes or bubbling magma flows , both stalked by gigantic powerful beasts , the greatest of all the mighty Ice Drakes from which the chapter draws it's name. The humans of this world reside in large centralized steam citadels . They have their own pdf regiment who use the ancient las lock rifles from the great crusade and their main source of industry is in mining the world for it's many precious metals.

Quirks: Close friends with a Rogue Trader Dynasty , no librarians , they use the massive Icedrakes of Boreas as mounts, Honor the Primarch Vulkan above all others but the emperor himself.

Organization: Because of their use of The massive beasts of their planet as mounts the ice Drakes have access to maelstrom squads. Heavily armored vanguard riding on the back of Frost Dragons who charge into the enemy lines and cause disorder with their frost breath and crushing might. Due to their proclivity for close quarters and salamander descent there are quite a lot of master forged chainswords , thunder hammers , and power axes in the Ice Drakes arsenal.As well as the unique flash freeze guns , modified flamers that shoot out a fast freezing liquid that can freeze an Ork Nob solid in under a second of contact. Flamers are in heavy use as well which should be no surprise.

Background: Vulkeyr twiceborn was named that for a reason , formerlya traitor astartes of the Night Lords chapter , during a battle with the Dread Hammers Vulkeyr was captured. Through many trials and challenges Vulkeyr was redeemed in the eyes of both 'Man and Emperor' and was soon sent out to die a glorious death in battle and have his guilt lain to rest. Yet whenever a chaplain was sent to find his unit , Vulkeyr always survived , battle after battle , campaign after campaign Vulkeyr always survived. Seeing this as the favor of the emperor Malkion Chapter Master of the Dread Hammers named him Vulkeyr the Twiceborn , which he took as a surname. Now believing the former traitor was ready to serve alongside the rest of his loyal brothers Malkion inserted him into a  sept in house Dawnstorm. Quickly Vulkeyr rose through the ranks , his charming bombastic presence during peace and cold efficiency in battle earning him the respect or friendship of many a battle brother. For years he served with distinction and pride as a Brother Elect of his sept until the valiant death of the Brother Patriarch in the face of a daemon prince. It was a great surprise when his brothers turned to him to take up the mantle , but one he readily accepted despite his sorrow. Now as Patriarch of house Dawnstorm it is Vulkeyr's sacred duty to lead his brothers against the forces of chaos and continue his path of redemption. For though Vulkeyr was born twice , no one get's a third chance.

Appearance : Osiris is tall for a human standing at 6'7 , with a powerful build from years of fighting for the emperor , his eyes are hetero chromatic one purple one blue and his hair (though shaved) is black. His skin is a deep umber , and following rejuvenation he has regained the handsomeness of his prime looking to be only in his early thirties. He was a strong nose , high cheekbones and powerful jaw with a long scar travelling from his left cheek down diagonally to his chin. His left hand up to the elbow was replaced by an ornate black and gold prosthetic hand following an injury in the line of duty.
Gear: Daemonhammer he likes to call his 'gavel' , bolt pistol , relic black and gold power armor imbued with the blessings of a saint , psy skull which follows him about recording things of interest and his personal journals , forbidden tomes of daemon lore.
Background:


  Born on the civilized jungle world of Catherros to a noble family , Osiris spent his early childhood training to take control of his noble house upon his uncle's eventual retirement. Yet this was not the Emperor's will , at least not yet, the emperor had a far greater road for him , though it would be paved in blood and bone. It was night following a great celebration , a cultural holiday of the jungle planet celebrating their love for the Emperor and appreciation of his gifts. Yet during all this revery ,a psyker servant of the house of Gaul slipped, his joy at the reverence of his god corrupted by a daemon of the warp who wrested his mind in a split second.And so from that holy night a monster was born when none else knew. When all but the servitors slept the daemon struck , cutting down the guards with it's unnatural strength and striking down others with it's warp-powered might. Osiris awoke to the sound of crackling electricity and burning flesh as the woman he chose as his wife was burned with psyker lightning before him, his own latent psyker abilities protecting him. Enraged and distraught he struck out on instinct , destroying the daemon's host body from within with biomancy and forcing it to flee back to the warp. No sooner had this happened then the Daemon hunters arrived.

 From there the rest is history, Osiris facing either death as fuel for the emperor or the chance to serve the imperium and perhaps even gave revenge joined the order without hesitation. Later he would jokingly think to himself that maybe he should've been a bit more thoughtful. Regardless there was no going back he was on his way to becoming an Inquisitor , studying the lore of daemons and the warp under his learned Master , the Inquisitor Vao-Ten Mirath. The training almost came naturally to him , he had spent his childhood learning the art of oration and manipulation , how to counter against rivals and tell the intention of a man by a look, for he would have needed it as Lord of Catherros. Through trial after trial and even the loss of his first mentor (along with his left arm) he finally achieved the rank of inquisitor and became an official agent of the emperor's will.


 Osiris has spent a long career in service to the empire , his firm faith in the emperor and his laws guiding him through many a peril , whether that be from daemons of the warp , traitor space marines or even rivals within the inquisition itself. He has been famous and infamous , touted as a champion of the Imperium and almost declared a heretic only to claw his way back to a spot of renown. Yet throughout all this , throughout his many perilous journeys and treks , he knows the path the emperor has set for him is not finished, and there is still much more blood to be spilled if he is to get his vengeance. Now hearing tell of the resurgence of the daemon who destroyed his home in the outer sectors , allying with a troop of Night Lords , he treks out to the system belonging to the dread hammers, intent on continuing the collision course that sets the two against each other.

Background: Though none would doubt the he is a fully mature and proven marin; Lukos is young. Young to have had his sept so thoroughly decimated before his eyes, young to have faced a demon prince, young to bear as many scars as he does. He was never the exemplary and disciplined marine many of his comrades were; hell he barely made it through all of his trails as a trainee, his normal attitude was and still is casual bordering on dereliction of duty, and to top all that off he never really excelled at anything besides psychic abilities and melee, in fact he was continually the lowest scoring recruit to be accepted and survive on just about everything else. His story is one of barely making the cut, so imagine the surprise of his fellow members of house dawnstorm; when he rose from among the corpses of his sept in the final battle in the war of shrines battered and bloodied, with armor cracked and bolt pistol shattered to banish to banish a daemon prince in brutal single combat, and survive. From there he was taken in by another Sept, a command sept of all things who had lost a member in the battle.

Background: Novia has been with the scion Company the Unchained for fourteen years, but has only been in command for the last ten after the last comander ate an unlucky bolter round from a chaos marine directly in the mouth. The Company is like family to her, and while she has loyal to the inquisitor ever since he recruited them in a small war against the enslaver menace; she's been with a lot of them from day one when they were first deployed to fight the dark eldar in the corribra sector, and takes her duty to her company very bit as seriously as he duty to guard the inquisitor. Nearly every op she undertakes is meticulously planned and thought out, as a body guard, and a commander.

Background: Arel is a competent and well respected battle brother who has served with honor in many campaigns, but that is all he is; or at least all he is to the chapter. He's always been a natural stoic existing on the fringes of his house, not forming close ties with anyone outside of Sept, and even with them he remains stoic and hard to read. He's fought in many battles along side Vulkeyr, but unlike vulkeyr he has no great suicidal charges to his name. He does his job, and he does it well; that's about all most of the chapter knows about him, or really care to know about him; he is in their mind just another soldier if a particularly dull one. In private however he enjoys poetry, carving and whittling statues and inscriptions, and model ships.

Background: Kalina was taken as a child, and trained as part of the order of the nightingale. She was arguably the most awkward child however; her stubbornness and smart assery resulted in many a punishment, which barely resulted in making her lose the sarky nature but taught her the most important times to hold her tongue, including but not exclusively forcing her to give sermons and joining the choir, the latter of which she all but refused to open her mouth. Due to her initial incredible impatience, training her battle cat proved difficult and the initial relationship was not the best; she spent many a day in search for the thing after it ran away from her. Further punishments proceeded, to encourage her to develop more patience, and she eventually managed to train the thing; a 6 foot arabian leopard. Due to her rocky beginning, she is not high in the ranks, but desperately wishes to succeed and will more than likely do anything to.

Background: Gallus is a sergeant in the Garmr Planetary defense force, taken from one of th the planet’s southern tribe’s as a child, but deemed slightly unfit to be made an astartes, he was instead placed in training for the planetary defense force. Gallus excelled in the strict drills and training, and was great at relating to his fellow cadets with a good sense of humor and a laid back attitude, but was not quite as good at taking orders he disagreed with which earned him the lash a few times, and the ire of many of his commanding officers. Nonetheless his talent with machines surfaced in his early teens, which led to him being trained as an operator under a dread hammer tech marine for a few years. He would first see combat as part of a heavy infantry regiment in a mission to reinforce a sister’s of battle Talon under attack by orks, on the only agri world in system; Illium five. In the ensuing battle after the squad sergeant was shot down, Gallus a corporal at the time took charge, and lead his squad to destroying an Ork gargant; earning him a promotion after the battle was over.

Appearance : To start with the primaris psyker is eyeless those having melted in their sockets during his soul binding, hairless as well from the same ritual. His body is a pale emaciated gangly thing, but it is stronger than it looks. His head is misshapen, bulbous, and bears several visible cybernetic along with a visible throbbing vein beneath the skin near the cranium. Most might charitably describe his looks as unsetting

Background:  Caeso is a psyker recovered by an inquisitor from an undercover daemon world of the thousand sons at age eight, he doesn’t speak of his life before, but he was untainted when he was saved despite being an exceptionally powerful psyker, by what was fortunately a radical who saw him as a potential future asset to the imperium; as such he was given to the black ships, since the inquisitor was no baby sitter, where he was categorized as a primary psyker one capable of fending off daemons without the soul binding (which he would have to undergo anyway) Truth be told Caeso never fit in; even among his peers in the scholastica psykana he was an outcast, but he never did mind; when one has been marred such as he by the warp and various rituals revulsion is simply a natural response, on top of that there was the fear his power provoked that made him something of a freak among freaks. He didn’t blame anyone for his life as an outcast, he couldn’t really, because as his powers gleaned who the people around him were; their likes, hopes, fears, and dreams he started to feel attached to them; like they were his friends, only of course they weren’t.

The training he was put through by the scholastica psykana was merciless and grueling, but he excelled thanks to incredible focus and willpower, and by the time he was eighteen he was deployed alongside a cadian regiment.  Since his first deployment he has been deployed time and time again often expected to counter enemy psykers or champions with his own abilities, in all that time he’s drifted from unit to unit always performing admirably, always feeling kinship with people who felt none for him, always seeing them die. Recently his distinguished service was rewarded with position as as psyker lord, a redeployment to a more dangerous and remote part of the galaxy, and the service of an up and coming battle psyker he was meant to spend a few years testing.
