Backstory:  Garret, a young man from a small town in Kansas when he was eight he met and old sorcerer who called himself Doc. Doc saved his town from a rampaging demon; Garret was in awe and begged the Doc to teach him magic which the doc declined and advised him against trying to learn magic. Garret didn't go on to become a supervillian out of butt hurt or anything because he's not a giant dick; in fact he never saw that doc again, but he did make it his personal mission to completely disregard Doc's advice and learn magic because that stuff was pretty awesome. Thus Garret became a rogue and unlicensed magic user; he had to leave his hometown after dropping out of high school and move to dark grove; a city full of crime where he could study the occult and get along by doing magical odd jobs, and so long as he kept a low profile no one should notice.
