Devi , and the tome of eldritch horror

Post by The Lord Regent on Mon Oct 17, 2016 1:49 pm

It was late in the evening when devi was being made to clean out the attic for a yard sale a big black leather book twitched, and fell off a box onto the vampire's head. It then landed face up showing its title "incantations of the void" the front of th e book depicted a pile of bones, and a skull.

"Shit!" Devi cried, cringing as the book crashed to the floor. Rubbing at her now throbbing scalp, she knelt down to examine it, using her fingers to wipe the thick layer of dust that coated its surface. She murmured its title to herself, curious eyes narrowing on the bones depicted on the cover. She had always been into the macabre, and dark fantasy, so this seemed right up her alley. She perched herself crosslegged on the floor, and began gently flicking through the old volume.

As she flipped through the pages it was clear  this was a book of magic everything from: dangerous blasts of harmful magic, to starting fires, to moving objects, to raising the dead, and summoning spirits could be found in its pages. What's more it radiated power, and seemed to metaphorically draw he in with promise of magical ability.

With every spell she found, she became more interested, more engrossed in the pages, as if it were calling to her. A smile spread on her face, and curiosity tugged on her to see if it was legitimate. Something small can't hurt... Hm... Best to start off small. She found the magic for moving objects, and skimmed through the information it contained on it.

It was a simple spell involving concentration on an object, and a single incantation.

"Alrighty then," She murmured before following the instructions. She uttered the incantation as carefully as she could, concentrating on an empty box a few feet from herself.

Devi was so surprised it actually worked, she yelped and jumped back, consequently knocking over some boxes in her wake, and sending dust and more books falling on top of her. The box she had been moving also fell to the ground when she lost concentration. She completely ignored these, however, and hurried back over to the book with renewed vigor as she searched for something else to try out. Dana would kill her if she started a fire in her house, so that was a no, and she didn't know any nearby dead bodies to try out the resurrection spell. Looks like she'd have to go with the spirits. She grinned. This was going to be interesting.

One vaguely  defined spirit caught her her eye, it was a dark spirit of the book that could be used to to bestow power upon oneself or others however  the spell recommended several summoning circles and other layers of defense , for the spirit was one of malice , and should not be allowed to escape.

Her gaze narrowed on this particular spell, and she swear she could hear it calling her name. "I shouldn't be doing this, I shouldn't be doing this..." She kept mumbling this to herself, as she followed the advice of the book, using old chalk she had found buried at the bottom of a box to draw the circles on the ground once she had cleared a big enough space. Once it was all prepared, she focused on the incantation for it.

Crow had sensed a surge of dark power from Chicago, imense, malicious power in the hands of an amateur, and though he did not know how he knew this, as he was ignorant of his past he knew it with certainty. Thus he sped away from his cave on a broom enchanted to fly desperate to stop a tragic mistake.

The spirit that was drawn as pure darkness from the book into the circle soon took a shape that was a twisted mass of dark piled tentacles that radiated rage, malice, and all the sins of mankind. When it spoke it was in a surprising pleasant voice, like a morgan freeman pleasant voice "And what does the lovely lady wish of me?" the creature asked

Devi crawled away, eyes about as wide as saucers. "Jesus Christ," She murmured, looking up at the hideous creature. "It worked."

"Oh, of course I get the sassy spirit," She said with an eye roll. "Uh, so I don't really have any plans for you, I was just curious to see if it would work."

Devi really didn't expect the tentacles to pounce at her, and so stumbled back in surprise, tripping over some boxes as she did so. Then more pain than she had ever felt before laced through her entire body. She writhed in agony, as waves after waves rolled through her very soul. She could hear screaming; she was in too much pain to realise it was coming from her.

Frantic running could be heard in the background. Devi's adopted mother Dana heard her daughter's screams "Devi hold on I'm coming!" She shouted out of fear, and worry which could be heard prominently in the kind woman's voice. She barged into the attic with a look concern on her face; though it soon became one of terror as she saw the abomination, and slid on the ground, right through the circle Devi had drawn, not only breaking the  summoning circle, but leaving herself inches away from the horror. Dana screamed in horror, and agony as the creature began to pull her apart with its tentacles like a malicious child who had caught an insect. Then revealed a gaping maw within the nest of tentacles in which it began to eat the still moving and screaming pieces. It was keeping dana alive with its magic as she  was consumed, it much enjoyed the squirming.

The pain faded, but Devi would rather have gone through it for the next hour than witness what happened next. "No!" She screamed, trying to get to her mother, desperately. She tripped again but righted herself and charged at the monster, trying to stop it from devouring Dana. "No! Stop!" she screamed at it. "Stop it, please!"

"Oh don't worry kiddo" The creature said in  a soothing voice. As it finished chewing, and swallowed the still screaming Dana chunks it caught Devi's leg with a tentacle, and dangled her upside down "you'll see your mother again soon." With that its maw twisted into a smile. There was no doubt what it would have done,ad crow not dived through the attic window at that moment. His hood was back revealing his grotesque face, as he land ended on the ground he rolled to catch himself in a hail of shattered glass. The ghoul threw out a hand through which came a torrent of dark magic, surging forward towards the monster with great speed. The beast dropped dev before it was sent crashing through the side of the attic leaving a hug hole. The creature plummeted,  towards the ground, but turned into a nightmarish bird creature an instant before impact, and flew away.

Devi let out a scream as the creature held her upside down. Something black swooped in out of the corner of her eye, and shards of glass rained down, before she was dropped to the ground. She curled up on herself, sobbing, as tears dampened her cheeks and trickled to the floor. "No..." She whispered. This shouldn't have happened... it was that damn book she had found, with its tempting spells. And now the only person she had ever loved was dead. And it was entirely Devi's fault.

It was clear from the girl's tears he was too late. Crow walked over to the book in the middle of the destroyed circle, and carefully picked it up tucked it into his robe. He didn't know what to do with the crying girl so he patiently waited for  her to calm down to coherence.
