So I have a friend who's really into this board game, warhammer 40000 so, he was telling me about it and it got me thinking it my be a fun roleplaying setting I'll give you the rundown let me know what you think


The Imperium of Man is a galaxy-spanning interstellar human empire, the ultimate authority for the majority of the human race in the Milky Way Galaxy in the 41st Millennium AD. It is ruled by the living God who is known as the Emperor of Mankind. However, there are other humanoid species classified as Imperial citizens, mainly mutant offshoots of genetic base-line humans who are known as Abhumans and include such human sub-races as the Ogryns, Ratlings and Squats. The founder and ruler of the Imperium is the god-like Emperor of Mankind, the most powerful human psyker ever born. The Emperor founded the Imperium over 10,000 Terran years ago in the late 30th Millennium during the Unification Wars on Old Earth following the terrible period in human history known as the Age of Strife. The Emperor continues, at least nominally, to rule the Imperium as both its political master and its primary religious figure, though His badly damaged body is interred within the cybernetic life support mechanisms of the arcane device known as the Golden Throne following His mortal wounding during the interstellar civil war known as the Horus Heresy. Because of this terrible fate, the Emperor is incapable of interacting with others on a day-to-day basis and has left the basic governance of His Imperium to the Senatorum Imperialis, an oligarchic ruling council of the most powerful lords and Adepts in the galaxy.

The Imperium of Man is a war-torn empire, teetering on the brink of collapse. For 10,000 Terran years it has been ruled by the deathless Emperor, a being of almost limitless psychic power, to whom thousands of souls are sacrificed daily. The peoples of the Imperium live in a place where daemons are real, mutation is frequent and death is a constant companion. To be alive in the late 41st Millennium is to know that the universe is a terrifying and hostile place. It is a place where you are but one amongst billions and, no matter how heroic your death, you will not be missed. A truly vast domain, the Imperium is spread amongst the many stars of the galaxy. Its territories encompass untold millions of stars and countless more human lives. In its name, terrible wars are fought and desperate sacrifices made, yet even this river of carnage and blood is a small price to pay, for the Imperium is the guardian of Mankind. Were it to pass into nothingness, so too would the human race, destroyed by enemies uncountable, to the braying laughter of the Dark Gods.

So I was thinking we could focus on a group called the Inquisition who exist to hunt down, dark god worshipers, demons, and rouge psykers within the empire. Now get ready have several pages of back story thrown at you...

In the modern 41st Millennium, the Inquisition is the most powerful organisation of the Imperium's many branches. Its agents, the Inquisitors, command fear and respect in equal measure. They are creatures of myth as much of flesh and blood, relentless beings who descend from on high to pass judgement upon the mutant, the traitor and the heretic. It is a rare citizen who does not dread drawing an Inquisitor's steely gaze, who does not experience the starkest terror in his or her presence. Every Imperial citizen, from the poorest of underhive scum to the highest and wealthiest of nobles, has heard the tales of death and destruction, of the all-seeing eye that condemns or absolves with impunity. Those who have crossed an Inquisitor's path and survived to tell of it are seldom eager to invite his attention again. Inquisitors are as varied in appearance and manner as the myriad threats they face. They range in age from fiery young zealots to hoary old veterans who have fought in the darkness for centuries. Some wear ostentatious robes and symbols of their allegiance, whilst others shun the trappings of status. Inquisitors commonly carry a wide range of weapons and wargear, so as to be prepared for any threat they might face. Some Inquisitors use outlandish weaponry, taken from defeated foes: exotic hardware, alien guns and Daemon-possessed weapons.

Inquisitors themselves care little for morality, and nothing at all for the Imperium's many laws and procedures, except when they choose to make use of them. They are the Emperor's left hand as the Adeptus Terra is his right, and stand in judgement over all the Imperium's organisations. Indeed, an Inquisitor is apart from the rest of Mankind in every way that matters. By ancient tradition, his authority comes directly from the Emperor himself; there is no hierarchy to which he must answer, and he is beholden only to his fellows. More than this, a bearer of the Inquisitorial Seal can requisition any servant in the Imperium to assist in his mission, from the lowliest of clerks to entire Space Marine Chapters and Imperial Navy battlefleets.

Military forces

The imperial guard
The guard is the largest military branch the imperium has, their serve as the main fighting force of the imperium, even the worst units are pretty well disciplined, and the best like cadian shock troops and catachan jungle fighters are really good soldiers. Standard infantry units are given a Lasgun (las guns are basic laser weaponry that are terrible against heavy armor unless focused.) and Flak Armour, and sent into battle. They can comprise small units or can be brought together to form a formidable swarm of men. A regular Imperial Guard infantry squad is composed of 10 soldiers, led by a non-commissioned officer who holds the rank of Sergeant. Often, one of the more experienced troopers of the squad will wield a specialist's weapon to add to his comrades' firepower; be it a Flamer, Sniper Rifle, Grenade Launcher, Plasma Gun or Meltagun. Elite units are usually equipped with "hot shot" lasguns which are much more effective, better armor and occasionally jetpacks.

Commissars

Commissars are a generally badass group of non typical soldiers, there is at least one commissar per imperial guard unit, they are authorized to use any means necessary to keep the unit loyal, and the morale up including executing any person or officer they perceive as unfit for duty or treasonous


Adeptus mechanicus

Machine priests are the main engineers of the imperium. They all the best techs and builders in the imperium, they keep the secrets of how to craft some of the imperium's most powerful machines and weapons and unlike the rest of the imperium they do not accept the emperor as god, they instead worship an ambiguous machine god and believe the emperor is more of a herald figure representing his will in the galaxy.

Space marines
They are the best warriors of the imperium, genetically modified and mentally conditioned humans to the point that they know no fear only devotion to their emperor, and while their numbers are much smaller than the imperial guard one of them is easily a match for several squads of standard infantry. They also have much better tech, such a bolt and plasma guns which far exceed lasguns, and power weapons for melee combat. They're also often kind of prickish to humans as they see even the best as a lesser species.


Psykers

Psykers are individuals from any species with the ability to draw power from the warp and channel it into things, but doing so leaves them open to demonic possession... It's basically like the mages from dragon age and the fade. Most psykers are rounded up and disposed of if they aren't strong enough of will to resist demonic possession when using their powers or are unfit for training. Those who are are are trained by the imperium to become sanctioned psykers of which there are a few types, most of them are either astropaths, or fight with the imperial guard as small squads of sanctioned psykers, or a pysker primaris the most powerful psykers of the imperium who are easily as useful as a space marine. There are also librarians who are basically space marine psykers.

So last peice of background info is the power levels of human psykers

Rho // Pi
No manifestation of psychic talent (common human being).
Omicron // Xi // Nu // Mu // Lambda // Kappa
Unconscious and minor level of psionic brain activity. Such low levels of talent only manifest in high-stress experiences and remain beyond the control of the individual. Phenomenon commonly explained as "good luck" or "fluke" occurrences.
Iota // Theta // Eta
Conscious and moderate level of psionic talent. As the individual is able to control abilities with effort, subjects of Iota level and higher are true psykers and under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition and Adeptus Astra Telepathica.
Zeta // Epsilon
Very high level of mental psychic activity. Manifesting early, these levels of talent (and those above) require the immediate attention of Imperial authorities and represent a true security threat.
Delta // Gamma
Occurring in approximately one-per-billion human births, Delta and Gamma level psykers exhibit extreme levels of psionic ability. Unless discovered quickly, death or possession are common results of the untrained mind being unable to handle this level of mental energy.
Beta // Alpha
Exceedingly rare and dangerous. Mainstream Medicae Imperialis discussion agrees that current human beings do not possess the necessary evolutionary development to contain Beta and Alpha levels of psionic talent, As such, the great majority of those discovered at this Assignment rating usually suffer from mental instability. Though a fe humans can exist at these levels without going insane
Alpha-Plus
In the rarest of all cases, the twenty-four point scale of the Assignment does not adequately characterize a being of indescribable ability. Such individuals, for all intents and purposes, pass beyond the scale entirely. These subjects are known as Alpha-Plus psykers.
Uncontained, Alpha-Plus psykers represent an immediate and catastrophic threat to the Imperium. In theory, there is nothing that a trained Alpha-Plus psyker cannot accomplish through force of will; from snapping a Titan in half to summoning a legion of Greater Daemons. Representing such a great danger, the Inquisition usually executes Alpha-Plus psykers on sight unless the possibility for capture is nearly assured.

So I was thinking we focus on an inquisitor and their retinue since they can recruit and\or pardon anyone and this will allow more freedom in the characters we can make sound good?

Background: he is a psykers obtained by the Inquisition at a very young age, instead of being executed or sent to the adeptus telepathica as most would have been he trained under the Inquisition eventually becoming an inquisitor of the ordo malleus (daemon hunters)

I forgot to mention one important thing, psykers draw from the warp and if a psyker lacks the self control to control their powers, their souls are quickly eaten by daemons. Or they are possessed,


anyway approved but is she an inquisitor or an inquisitor in training?

Longinus stands in the bridge of an imperial stealth cruiser he had requisitioned from the imperial fleet specially for his current mission. On one of the moons of cadia the lunar outposts had gone quiet, the local military was too busy fighting the forces of chaos on the planets to investigate their moon bases silence, and given the moons proximity to he eye of teror, a massive gateway to the warp and the demonic plane in space. The empire had seen fit to send an inquisitor to investigate. "Zana how far out are we from the moon?" Longinus asked his acolyte

Background: he's a soldier from a hive world decimated by nuclear war. like most of those who come from the hive world krieg he joined the imperial guard to attone for the sins of his ancestors, and he rarely ever takes off his rebreather mask or uniform so his age can only be guessed at. He is the commander of the imperial guard forces sent with the inquisitor for backup should it be needed.

Weapons: "Hot shot" Lasrifle, mono knife, chainsword, and grenades

Zana looked up from her weapon as Longinus spoke. "Roughly 100,000 miles from here. Why you ask?" she asked him, before feeling a bit weird about asking him that. She cleared her throat as if to apologize to him afterwards but she then remained silent.

(That's the best I got so far! Don't judge me!)

Longinus smirks at her timidness for a moment then speaks "As an agent of the inquisition you are the second highest person on this ship, next to me. On top of that I am your teacher you're allowed to ask questions, anyway at this rate we'll reach it within the hour. I need you to make sure our squads from the death korps of krieg are ready to go when we get there"

Zana nodded before she pulled out her radio, sending the same message to all the squad leaders. "This is Agent Zana, I call you to have your squads meet at the armory. I will meet you there and examine them myself. Over." she finished. She looked at him, waiting for a potential response. "I radioed all the squad leaders from death korps of krieg, ordering their squads to meet at the armory." she informed her teacher, saying it away from the radio so the other line didn't hear.

"A word of advice the death korps is a bit more... suicidal than other regiments, they will attack any enemy we run across head on no matter how bad the odds seem unless ordered not to." Longinus warns her of the death korps nature in advance "they're great fighters for ordinary humans but the name death korps comes from their mortality rate"


Trask leads the squad to the armory where they begin their routine check of their weapons, as with every time you've seen them they are already in full uniform with gas masks covering their faces. this time the seem to have horses in tow
