The Legion of Hell

"Don't need it but what's wrong with a little excess?" She replied with a grin and with that promptly charged down to the gates like a bull. With a running leap she hopped right up onto the walls into the fight , the Garrison of the fort fighting tooth and nail to keep the psychopathic marauders from taking the walls and gate.

A dozen sets of hooves pounded on the old hilly road as the squad of horseman grew closer and closer to reaching the fort. But as they galloped down the rain-slick dirt path Rook began to smell something on the air from upwind...blood , and smoke.

"How in the world could they beat us here" He murmured to himself quietly, and without warning spurred his horse on darting ahead of the rest of the group, he had to find syndr, he knew she was too stubborn to retreat; he had to make sure she got out of there alive

The main gate was busted down , smoke drifting into his eyes and nose out of the fortress as he charged over corpses , shattered weapons and mangled horses. The sounds of gunfire and clashing steel filled the entire world as he rode in to the flaming fortress . It was clear the Mystrian troops were being pushed back by the mere self destructive brutality of their foes all about men could be seen , some dead and some in the midst of their final throes. From the carnage a blast of flame erupted from the medical tents area , and several men were visibly sent flying. However before he could act he heard screaming coming from a nearby tent.

Rook being rook dismounted, ran over, and flung open the tents flap in the most heroic and dramatic way possible

One of the nursemaids was being held down by some surly brigand type while another seemed to be loosening his belt buckle. They had not even finished the battle yet and already they had begun to engage in such thoughtless barbarism.

Of course he doesn't have time to finish undoing his belt buckle before his head is smashed like a watermelon by the blast, the other one had his chest blasted out before he could turn around. A combination of Rook not getting people in shock, and being desperate to find his friend, lead him to immediately interrogate the poor girl "I'm looking for my friend Syndr, gigantic woman, big sword, dresses like a medieval warrior moonlighting as a prostitute."

She seemed much to shocked and horrified by everything to answer and only replied with terrified babbling.

"Just run, away from here as fast as you can." The artillery mage suggested after shaking her out of it, he didn't have time for this. He needed to find syndr. He was pushing his way out of the tent again very quickly.

With a frantic nod of her head the maid ran off without another word,leaving Rook alone to his search.Luckily he didn't have to run around for too long , as a massive gout of fire from the inner keep quickly alerted him to the location of his familiar.

Rook would try to sneak his way there, only fighting when neccessary, it would only slow him down; his priority was not fighting off an army, it was finding syndr.

The scene he found in the keep was, not an encouraging one to say the least. As he struggled through the thick clouds of smoke and stinging embers what had happened became all too clear. Surrounded by a great heap of charred corpses belonging to both man and beast , was the prone form of a giant lizard. Weak pufts of smoke loosing from it's nostrils as it shook on the ground.

From the smoke Rook Rushed toward her, joking to cal his own nerves "Hey have you been putting on weight?" as he ran over to the salamander "Syn we need to get out of here now, can you change form? I'll summon something to carry you." The wizard gushed full of worry, as he reached ad hugged the big beast. Right now all he could think about was getting the person dearest to him to safety, damn the revolution, damn his experiments still in his lab, and damn the war, and damn his own well being until she was safe.

A shaking purr was the only reply as she sluggishly nuzzled her massive head into his chest...she was dying, that much was clear.

"No..." Rook said, when he saw the look in her eyes, shock began to set into his; as he for a brief moment froze in absolute terror at the realization he was losing her "NO" He shouted at her as his brain began to work again, and he started looking for any wounds that could have caused this "You're not dying here!" He yelled at her, he refused to let this happen, he'd tear out his own life force and give it to her if he could... she was all he had left, she meant the world to him.

The puffs of fire grew slower and slower with every passing second , though the steady rumbling remained calm and constant as one of her eyes opened to look at him , heavy lids lifting sluggishly . From her side was a lance , most likely jammed in by a now dead or dying horseman , it seemed to have hit a weak point in her tough scales and pierced through her ribs. There was a chance he could still do something to fix this , but it was slim.

Rook new just how slim the chance was, he always kept a potion on hand, but he was not that kind of doctor, still he had to try" I love you; you scaly savage, now bite down this is going to hurt" he gave her a peck on her monstrous cheek and as quick as he could Rook took out a healing potion, then far more carefully began to pull out the lance; he knew he needed to clear the obstruction before giving a potion to her or it'd make things worse. The trick here was to not take to long, but to also not hurt anything on the way out; a task to which he dedicated all his finesse. His heart was pounding with fear, but he kept his hands steady.

As the words left Rook's mouth the salamander's eyes widened in surprise , however with the toll of her wounds and the shock being much too great , slowly the lids of her eyes drooped back down and she fell into unconsciousness.

"Come on please hand on." Rook begged her as he emptied the health potion into her now open wound as quickly as he can. Rook was not a man of religion, but as the wound began to close and she passed out he was desperate; so much so that now that he fell to his knees and began to pray that the potion would do its work before she expired "Please you've taken so much, don't let her die, please..." He whispered and beg to any god that would listen as he fought to hold back tears

Slowly the fire in her nostrils began to grow brighter and hotter .
